Borough bosses bemused by bun ban banter

05 April 2007
CLAIMS by a Caribbean online newspaper that the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has banned schools from serving hot cross buns for Easter have been 'rubbished' by the Town Hall.

A 'bun persecution' report was put out by Cayman Net News said schools in Tower Hamlets had been ordered to impose a blanket bun ban for fear of offending non-Christians. The traditional small currant buns are marked with a cross to symbolise the Crucifixion.

The newspaper said Tower Hamlets was moving away from a religious theme for Easter and would probably serve naan bread instead. But Tower Hamlets denied the claim and insisted hot cross buns were not banned.
