Gorillas go ape to get into record books
20 September 2006
The Great Gorilla Run is a charity event taking place this Sunday 24 September in the City of London, where 650 people will run 7km (4 miles), dressed in full gorilla suits, with the aim of helping save the world's last remaining gorillas.
What's more, this year's race aims to break the world record for the 'greatest gathering of people dressed in gorilla costumes' with competitors coming from as far away as Germany, Iceland and the USA!
The fun starts at 10.30 AM at Dunster Court, Mincing Lane, London EC3 (a short walk from Tower Hill tube) and ends at 12.30 PM at the same point. The run takes in four London bridges, including Tower Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. Why not come along and join in the crazy spectacle where hundreds of gorilla costumes will be dressed in funny customized outfits that win a special prize?
JAZZ(tm) apples, provided by Worldwide Fruit, will be given to competitors and spectators alike, proving that bananas are not the only fruit as far as gorillas are concerned.
The person who raises the most funds for The Gorilla Organisation will win a meal for four at The Quality Chop House in Clerkenwell.
The race also has the backing of local and Hollywood celebrities like Massive Attack, who have put their tracks to a promotional video and Daryl Hannah, who recently visited the gorillas in Africa. Daryl said, "Please help save the earth's last 700 mountain gorillas".
This event, wish is set to bring in funds of over £250,000, has become one of the most vital ways for the Gorilla Organization (formerly the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund), to raise cash to help save gorillas in Africa.
"A lot of people in the UK are worried about environmental issues and it's sometimes hard to know what you can do to make a real difference. The great news is that they can help to save an endangered species through this fantastic event in London," said Jillian Miller, director of the Gorilla Organization.
