Jesus was a Jew—not a Muslim
Dear Ed,
SOMETIMES people give offence to others intentionally or unintentionally. I am not sure which was the case when a white car went past my house in Spitalfields in East London with a loudspeaker calling out, “Jesus was a Muslim.”
Since I don’t know the man or where he is from, I am writing this in case he reads it as I disagree with his statement.
Jesus lived and died a Jew. We read in The New Testament that he was born a Jew, circumcised when he was eight days old, according to Jewish Law, and went to Jerusalem when he was 13 to be Bar Mitzvah.
As an adult, he observed the Jewish law and in fact said, “I have not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfil them.”
When he was asked which was the greatest commandment, he quoted the Jewish Sh’ma Yisroel, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.” Before he physically died on a cross, he used words from the Jewish Psalm 31, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
