New AFC Wimbledon captain Mat Mitchel-King is looking to lead by example as he prepares to lead the side into the new campaign.

Manager Terry Brown appointed the former Crewe defender as skipper and the 25-year-old is looking to set a good example for the team.

“I’m normally a captain that sets a good example,” Mitchel-King told London24.

“I’ve not been in great form so far but thankfully it’s only pre-season.

“I’ll play a lot better in the next few weeks.

“I’ve got to know a the new lads and I’m working out whether they react to you shouting or raising your voice or whether you react by a look or by putting your arm around them and talking to them for a level.”

Mitchel-King was surprised to have been given the role but was in no doubt that he’d accept the role and was honoured to take it.

“It was weird because in my first season here, it was about me getting fit,” he added.

“The fact I played about 27 games was good as I had three successive injuries.

“Terry has seen something in me in training and in games.

“When he told me there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be captain.

“It must have been a tough decision with Sammy [Moore] and Jack [Midson] playing well last year, but I’m happy that at the last three clubs I’ve been at - Histon, Crewe and AFC Wimbledon - I’ve led the side.”
