Chelsea interim manager felt that Fernando Torres had earned his spot in the starting XI through his performances on the training ground.
It was a surprise as Torres was expected to make way for Demba Ba, because of the former Newcastle man’s absence for Thursday’s Europa League tie at Slavia Prague.
But Benitez explained why the £50m man got the nod.
“In the last two training sessions he was doing really well, good finishing, happy, sharp,” explained Benitez.
“It might have been easier for me to play Demba Ba, but with his problem (broken nose) I said as he is training well, I will give minutes to Fernando.”
