The vehicles which were called out from Shadwell and Poplar fire-stations collided at Westferry Circus as they approached the scene of a blaze in a store-room.

The trapped firefighter was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital at Whitechapel, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The other crew-members were assessed for shock and minor injuries, with six being taken to hospital.

The crews were responding to a blaze in a store room in Westferry Circus when the fire-tenders collided as they arrived at around 7.40pm.

Rescue units were then sent out from Millwall, Bethnal Green and Homerton. The store-room blaze was under control two hours later.

An investigation into the collision is now under way.
