Bethnal Green Library is being upgraded with a start-up workspace and gallery.
The improvements, which began in 2016, will also replace the derelict roof and windows while maintaining some of the building’s original features.
It will be closed from March 5 until April 29 while refurbishment is carried out.
The electrical wiring and lead piping is due to be replaced and a disabled lift will be installed.
The rooms on the first floor will be made into a workspace, available for use by start-up businesses. The two rooms either side of the main entrance are also due for refurbishment and will be made into event and gallery space for commercial hire or community use.
The library opened in 1922. Before then, the Grade II listed building was part of Bethnal House asylum, nicknamed ‘Barmy Park’.
For library or internet facilities until it reopens, visitors can use the Whitechapel Idea Store in Whitechapel Road.
