An actress and youth theatre director has won an award for her performance in a television commercial.

Suzann McLean Robinson, who runs the Young & Talented group at Oxford House, Bethnal Green, scooped a gold British Arrows gong for her role in a BUPA advert.

She won Best Performance of 2017 for her role in the advert, entitled ‘For Owning the Dancefloor’, which sees Suzann’s character leave her illness behind and dance at a party.

The British Arrows awards have been running for 40 years and recognise talent in the advertising industry.

Other winners include Channel 4’s Paralympics trailer and the John Lewis, Sainsburys and Waitrose Christmas adverts.

Suzann said: “It was an incredible honour to win this award and amazing to know that my performance BUPA advert has touched so many people.”

The actress, whose previous acting credits include appearances in Doctor Who, Casualty and last year’s Sky comedy drama You, Me and The Apocalypse, is also well known in the theatre world for her work as founder and artistic director of the Young & Talented youth theatre groups at its existing twin bases of Bethnal Green and Barking.

Young success stories include Ellis George, who played schoolgirl Courtney in the 2014 series of Doctor Who, and Reece Buttery, one of the child ensemble cast of CBBC show The Dumping Ground.

The school is also set to open a new branch south of the river, in Deptford, later this month.

Suzann said: “We are so excited to be opening another Y&T branch, this time in south east London, providing the opportunity for more young people to benefit from the creative arts.”

She has also seen recent success as a director, with her performance of Anders Lustgarten’s play Extremism – set in an east London classroom and focusing on a boy taken away by the police – selected for the National Theatre’s Connections Festival. It will be performed at the Dorfman Theatre on Wednesday, June 28.

She said: “To be one of ten theatre groups chosen from over 250 groups across the UK is a great achievement.”
