A cannabis farm has been discovered in a dawn drugs raid on an east London housing estate at Limehouse today.

Police smashed in the door of a flat in a block of flats near Salmon Lane, by the Regent’s Canal, following a powerful smell of drugs by a neighbourhood patrol service coming from a bedroom 12 hours earlier.

They found 70 cannabis plants in the flat which were being grown using strong electric lights connected illegally to the mains supply, it has emerged.

The drugs bust follows Monday’s raid at Shadwell two miles away which launched the Met’s Operation Continuum war on East End drug dealers.

“We discovered a cannabis factory in a residential property,” police Sgt Paul Stock said.

“This is part of Operation Continuum targeted against drug dealing and anti-social behaviour. We’ve been hearing residents’ concerns and are striving to make streets safer.”

The latest raid follows a security firm on neighbourhood patrol just 12 hours earlier which detected cannabis fumes coming from a bedroom in the block.

The unauthorised wiring in the flat had created a fire hazard for neighbours in surrounding properties, according to Tower Hamlets Homes social landlords who manage the Locksley Estate.

A tenant who has lived in the block since 2012 could now face criminal proceedings and a civil injunction, the housing body told the East London Advertiser today.

The 2014 Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act allows landlords to take fast-track action for repossession orders rather than having to go through the courts.

Deputy mayor Sirajul Islam, who sits on Tower Hamlets Homes’ management board, said: “We mean business and don’t tolerate anti-social behaviour.

“Police took action within 12 hours of the cannabis being detected. The next step is to use civil powers for eviction.”

The organisation has had seven dedicated police officers on its estates since September working with its anti-social team.
