London Assembly member for City and East, Unmesh Desai, has condemned homophobia and transphobia in Tower Hamlets.

Speaking out on the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia, the member for the City, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Barking and Dagenham emphasised City Hall’s zero tolerance attitude towards hate crime.

There were 116 reports of hate crime in Tower Hamlets in 2017/18.

Unmesh Desai said: “It is horrendous to think that people in our community are being subjected to this disgusting abuse. In Tower Hamlets we pride ourselves on being a diverse community, in which all are welcome.

“My message to those on the receiving end of any abuse is to always seek help and do not suffer in silence. I know that local people will join me in saying we won’t tolerate any homophobic or transphobic abuse in our borough.”

The Met Police have a unit dedicated to tackling online issues with hate crime. There were 2,094 incidents of homophobia reported across the capital last year, and 174 incidents of transphobia.
