A man was left fighting for his life after being stabbed in what is thought to be a racially motivated attack.

Police are appealing for information about the attack, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, June 19.

The man was stabbed several times in an underpass after getting into an argument with a group of men.

The argument began in Follett Street but after the situation calmed the victim went and sat in the nearby underpass with six of the men and were chatting and drinking.

However the victim was then stabbed in what police believe to be a racially motivated attack.

The group ran off while the victim staggered to the road, where he was able to flag down a taxi driver who rang the emergency services.

The victim is still in hospital recieving treatment for his injuries but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

No arrests have been made yet and the police are continuing with their enquiries.

PC Simon Maude, from Tower Hamlets CID, said: “This was a vicious attack which left a man fighting for his life. Our initial enquiries have made good progress and we continue to work to identify those who were involved in the attack.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area of Follett Street or St Leonard’s Road in the early hours of Tuesday, June 19 and saw a group of six males leaving the area on foot at around 2:40am to contact me.

“You may hold vital evidence that could assist this investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 or alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
