Yesterday’s rain put a slight dampener on the free ‘Games on the Screen’ outdoor cinema set up to bring the Olympics live to Poplar in London’s East End for those who couldn’t get tickets.

But it wasn’t enough to put people off altogether when the giant screen went up in Langdon Park, arranged by Poplar Harca housing association.

“It took a while for every one to come back after the rain,” said a Poplar Harca spokeswoman explaining the modest turn-out. “But we got quite a few back for the Athletics semi-finals and even more who watched Usain Bolt get the 100 metres gold.”

The big screen also attracted tourists arriving at Langdon Park on the DLR including Americans, Germans and Dutch—as well as Jamaicans watching their national hero win the prestigious 100 metres.

Project Manager Paul Augarde said: “The rain couldn’t deter enthusiasm for athletes breaking records just down the road in Stratford.”

The screening attracted 1,500 spectators to the park over the weekend, despite the odds shows spoiling the sunny spells.
