East End Bangladeshis reach “Power 100” list

Prominent members of the Bangladeshi community met at a special Westminster ceremony to celebrate good work in the worlds of politics, business and education.

They visited MPs’ office Portcullis House last week as an honours list named the British Bangladeshi Power 100 was announced.

The list recognises the achievements of British Bangladeshis in ten areas including entrepreneurism, voluntary organisations and the media, among others.

The list was created by Tower Hamlets Cllr Abdal Ullah, a Labour member for St Dunstan’s and Stepney Green and Ayesha Qureshi MBE, who had a prominent role in the 2012 Olympics bid.

Mr Ullah said the awards linked in the 40th anniversary of Bangladeshi independence and added: “I strongly believe we have amongst us individuals and organisations with real influence that are making a difference to how the community is viewed by the wider public.”

Telecoms managing director Naufal Zamir was named in the entrepreneur and business section and Ruqsana Begum was named for her work in education, culture and sports

Chairman of the East London Mosque, Muhammad Abdul Bari, was named in the religious leaders section.

The list, set to be annual publication, is determined by a committee of Bangladeshi UK-based newspaper editors and other leading figures.
