A fun festival for school pupils interested in science and medicine careers held at Mile End had experiments like a meter testing their lung capacity and equipment measuring their heart size.

The exhibition at Queen Mary University’s Mile End campus aimed at making science fun to learn as well as unveiling career opportunities.

They included one staged by Whitechapel’s biomedical research centre run by Barts Health NHS Trust.

“The room was filled with laughter,” the research centre’s Jane Batchelor said. “The ‘hands on’ exhibits showed the younger generation how much fun science can be.

“The festival is a space for young people curious about science and medicine or thinking about a career to get a better understanding of the opportunities.”

The biomedical centre was set up to help new diagnoses and therapies for patients with rare and common disease while involving them in the research.
