Students at Manorfield Primary School have spent the past term taking part in Times Table Rock Stars, an app and online game in which you win coins as you improve your maths skills.

Users pick a character whom they take to arenas to compete against other players. The programme was designed to combine the traditional worksheet format with the portability and addictive nature of an app.

Bruno Reddy is the maths teacher who set up TT Rockstars. He said the concept arose from experiencing the same problem that most maths teachers experience – trying to teach maths to pupils who don’t have a secure grasp of the times tables.

Since starting the programme, Manorfield has seen an improvement in pupils’ multiplication ability. They also take part in weekly Battle of the Bands competitions, where classes go head-to-head to see who can recall their tables the fastest.
