The boss of a mental health trust who guided it to an ‘outstanding’ CQC rating has been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours.

Marie Gabriel, who chairs East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT), has been made a CBE for services to the NHS.

Since joining the trust - which operates in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, the City of London and Bedfordshire - in 2012, Marie has helped to define a rights-based, recovery-focused approach that ensures patients are involved in planning, delivering and evaluating strategy services.

Marie, who was born in Mile End and now lives in East Ham, said: “I would like to dedicate this award to all the NHS staff that I have worked with, particularly the Windrush generation, which included my dad who travelled from St Lucia to start a new life in England.”

The trust’s chief executive, Dr Navina Evans, called Marie “an extraordinary leader who fully deserves this recognition”.
