A spectacular roof garden and an ordinary traffic roundabout have helped Tower Hamlets Council win the ‘best City’ title in this year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s UK finals.

The council was among seven local authorities and groups across London that made it onto the Britain In Bloom shortlist for awards announced last night at a “bloomin’ great” ceremony in Llandudno.

The top award for the urban area with a population between 100,000 and 200,000 went to Tower Hamlets which also took a Silver Gilt medal.

The town hall was praised for the “spectacular” Crossrail roof bridge garden and the perennial display on the Grove Road roundabout at Victoria Park, as well as Spitalfields City Farm.

The perennial floral display at the A1205 junction with Old Ford Road by the park gates have become a regular landmark for east London drivers.

The award was “well earned” by what judges recognized as a dedicated team doing what they could with the resources available, the society said.

Three other London entries also took Gold in various categories, including Walthamstow Village for sustainable planting and the London Bridge business improvement district with its alleyway landscaping and Greenwood Theatre pocket park.

The ‘large city’ category for areas with a population more than 200,000 went to Hillingdon Council next to Heathrow airport which landed a gold for its open spaces, allotments and 30 nature reserves.
