Members of Save King’s Stairs Gardens Action group are holding a public meeting on Thursday against proposals to build a sewer there as part of Thames Water’s Thames Tunnel project.

Local MP Simon Hughes will be attending having given his backing to the campaign several weeks ago. The public must submit their views to Thames Water by January 14.

He said: “King’s Stairs Gardens should not be the preferred site for the construction and operation of the main tunnel and I will be making a full submission to Thames Water setting out all my arguments before the end of the revised consultation period.”

Environmental campaigner David Bellamy is also due to visit the beauty spot in the new year after his trip was cancelled due to last month’s snow.

People in Wapping are also campaigning to save King Edward Memorial Park from another sewer shaft being built there as part of the 21-mile long tunnel which will replace London’s Victorian sewer works.

Thames Water say no decisions have been made yet and urge people to register their views at

www.thamestunnelconsultation.co.uk or by e-mail to thames.tunnel@thameswater.co.uk.
