Little Wahid Islam celebrated his birthday almost the same day as the NHS with at a pop-up free cake stall in Whitechapel Market—he turned five while the health service turned 70.

The infant schoolboy from Shadwell’s Bluegate Primary was out shopping with his mum when GP Anwara Ali set up a stall to give cake to passers-by.

He beat the march on shoppers when he lined up even before the first slice was cut.

The Spitalfields GP, who ran for mayor in May’s local elections, dished out the egg-free cake for the NHS birthday with its thick Tory blue icing — but wasn’t apologetic about the sugar content.

“I don’t normally encourage sugar as a GP,” she admitted. “But occasionally it’s okay and this is a special occasion. Carbohydrates are important—what becomes a problem is when we eat too much.”

There was enough cake for 70 shoppers. Dr Ali was confident the NHS would still be fresh in 2088 for little Wahid’s 70th birthday.
