Tower Hamlets Council have launched an online tool which helps people keep tabs on their drinking habits.

Don’t Bottle It Up allows people to check how risky their drinking is via a free, confidential test.

While almost half of the borough’s residents don’t actually drink, in the 52 per cent that do, alcohol-related problems are reported more often than average for London.

Councillor Denise Jones, head of adults, health and social care, said: “The majority of adults drinking above the recommended guidelines do not have an alcohol problem, but are at risk of developing health problems or a future dependency.

“These at risk drinkers may benefit from simple brief advice which highlights the risks of drinking at that level and the benefits of cutting down.”

DBIU gives people personalised advice and signposts them to the relevant help, based on the answers given. There are thought to be around 3,400 dependent drinkers in the borough, with more than 80 per cent not accessing treatment.
