There is a lower proportion of people with dementia in Poplar and Limehouse than in any other constituency in the UK.

Figures from Alzheimer’s Research UK show that just 0.38 per cent of the population has dementia - or, in real terms, 592 people.

The borough’s other constituency, Bethnal Green and Bow, was also in the five areas with the lowest levels of dementia.

There, just 0.5pc of people have the condition - equating to 710 people.

The areas with the highest prevalence typically have between 1,500 and 2,700 people suffering dementia.

Christchurch in Dorset has the most, with 2.81pc, with nearby New Forest West close behind with 2.65pc.

Dr Matthew Norton, director of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Dementia is our greatest medical challenge and with our ageing population, the number of people affected by this devastating condition is only going to rise.”
