COUNCIL results are trickling in at Tower Hamlets - but Labour is doing well and Respect has yet to win a seat on the council.

Labour's deputy leader Josh Peck has regained his Bow West seat and former Labour health spokeswoman Anwara Ali failed to keep her seat as a Conservative.

The Tories had a good return in Blackwall and Cubitt Town where Poplar and Limehouse parliamentary candidate Tim Archer took some comfort in regaining his seat along with party leader Peter Golds and newcomer housing campaigner Gloria Thienel.

Bow East remained Labour with regeneration spokesman Marc Francis and mayor Adam Omer keeping their seats.

In East India and Lansbury a delighted Shiria Khatun described how she fought back against smear tactics.

"This is a victory for women," she declared.

Rania Khan also celebrated an increased number of votes for Labour in Bromley by Bow despite facing a tough campaign.

Meanwhile Respect's results reflected the picture in the General Election in the East End. Bodrul Islam the groom who joined the party after the furore caused when Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick objected to segregation at his wedding failed to win the seat he was contesting for Respect in Bromley by Bow.

The full make up of the council is not yet announced.
