London 2012: Life-size sculpture of Stonehenge at BT London Live

A life-sized inflatable replica of Stonehenge will appear in Victoria Park this week as part of celebrations for the Olympic Games.

Sacrilege, by Jeremy Deller, is part of the London 2012 Festival and will be in the park in Tower Hamlets on Wednesday as part of BT London Live.

Visitors will get the chance to walk, bounce and play on the replica of the gigantic historical monument.

Sacrilege has attracted thousands of people at locations around the capital as part of the Mayor of London’s programme of free cultural events and attractions to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: “You don’t have to be a specialist in ancient British history or an acolyte of the summer solstice ritual to be aware of the unending fascination that Stonehenge continues to inspire around the world.

“Jeremy Deller’s Sacrilege is a wonderfully witty, quite literal leap into that history and a fantastic example of the irreverence that are hallmarks of our great British humour and our incomparable artists.

“Not only it is a piece of art but a free and fun attraction, which I have no doubt will be a great hit with people visiting Victoria Park Live Site especially families seeking out summer holiday entertainment.”

Visitors to BT London Live at Victoria Park can also go on a zip wire, try zorbing and take a ride on the observation wheel, which gives views across the Olympic Park.

All the Olympic sporting action is also being shown live on giant screens, and the event also includes performances from musicians.

BT London Live Victoria Park is also hosting Showtime performers from August 8 to August 12. Showtime is presented by the Mayor of London with the London 2012 Festival, and brings free outdoor performances to high streets, parks and open spaces across London.

In Victoria Park it includes Catalonian troupe Osadia, who create magical hair sculptures, as well as street theatre and performance from Bureau of Silly Ideas, plus more.

BT London Live Victoria Park is open from 9am to 11am.
