London 2012: More record passenger numbers for Tube and Overground

London Overground use is up by more than a quarter on normal levels because of the Olympic Games.

The line carried a record 2.86million passengers in a week, up 27 per cent on normal levels.

Passenger numbers on the Tube are also continuing at record levels, according to Transport for London (TfL). There were at least 3.7m journeys on Saturday on the Tube, up 11 per cent on the previous record. Sunday saw 3.2m journeys, up around 22 per cent on the previous record.

Tomorrow, day 12 of the Olympics, will continue to be busy for London’s public transport network.

Basketball will move from the Olympic Park to the North Greenwich Arena, and there will be beach volleyball taking place at Horse Guards Parade.

Areas around the venues will remain busy late into the evening, according to TfL.

The finals of the equestrian individual jumping at Greenwich Park will take place in the afternoon and spectators are expected to be travelling back towards central London during the evening peak. Key stations including London Bridge and Cutty Sark Docklands Light Railway station will be exceptionally busy and commuters are advised to avoid them where possible.

TfL is reminding people going to see the volleyball at Earls Court to check the time of their last train home, as the event finishes at 11pm.

London’s Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: “As we move closer to the final events and the culmination of a phenomenal sporting fortnight, I would urge people to continue to plan their journeys and avoid the busiest stations at the busiest times.

“Record numbers are using the transport network during this exciting time for London and, throughout the Games, Londoners have demonstrated their willingness to adapt their travel patterns and have made a huge contribution to the success of the Games so far.”
