The British showjumping team won gold after a jump-off with the team from the Netherlands, while cyclist Jason Kenny won the top spot in the men’s sprint.

The showjumping victory, by Nick Skelton, Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Peter Charles, was Britain’s first team gold in the event for 60 years.

Skelton, 54, had a hip replacement last year, and both he and Charles, 52, have suffered broken necks in the past.

Kenny’s victory in the Velodrome was his second gold of the Games - his first came in the men’s team sprint last week.

The 24-year-old was picked for the individual event over Sir Chris Hoy.

The medal was Britain’s fifth cycling gold of this Games.

Britain’s Beth Tweddle won a bronze in the final of the uneven bars, her first Olympic medal at her final Olympic Games.

Hurdler Dai Greene just missed out on a medal sport, coming in fourth place in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Team GB was third in the medal table overnight, with 18 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze, behind China and the US.
