A Tower Hamlets market inspector has explored the history of the trade in his new book.

Paul Morris writes about East London’s markets in A Toby in the Lane, including Brick Lane and Petticoat Lane.

“The markets have changed a lot over the years and I have always been interested in the historical side of it,” he explained.

“The area in which the markets are situated are fascinating in themselves and I have heard the stories of market traders over the years and I am aware of families of market traders going back generations.”

He said he felt compelled to write about the history of the markets after realising that no similar book had been written.

“They are a bit of an institution, really, and a fascinating place to work,” Paul, 46, said. “For a while Petticoat Lane was the most famous market in the world while Brick Lane was originally made famous as a bird mart and that was a great pull for the public.”
