Cyclists could soon find themselves pedalling on one of the new generation of Santander Cycles.

Transport for London has introduced the first of the bikes - featuring improved handling, a lower frame and puncture prevention - into its cycle hire fleet, with thousands more to be rolled out over the next few years.

The bikes, built by Pashley Cycles, have been designed to be easier to ride and maintain, and also include improved lighting, a gel saddle and bluetooth.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “It’s great news that the first of our new cycle hire bikes have arrived on London’s streets.

“Tens of thousands of Londoners and tourists enjoy using the bikes to get around every day, so by making them more comfortable we’re hoping they’ll be even more popular.”

Docking stations can be found around east London, including in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Canary Wharf and Whitechapel.
