The mayor who ditched his official limmo as soon as he took office has unveiled his latest bike port off east London’s Club Row to mark ‘car free’ day.

Tower Hamlets mayor John Biggs, who got rid of his council chauffeur-driven car the minute he took over in 2015 and goes to official engagements by bus, has unveiled three new bike racks including this one at Old Nichol Street in Bethnal Green.

It was part of Friday’s ‘car free’ initiative to encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transport more.

Mayor Biggs has now added 60 racks dotted around the East End with capacity to safely store 127 bikes in the battle to reduce air pollution.

Tower Hamlets is the fifth worst London borough for air pollution, according to Public Health indicators, with four-out-of-10 households living in areas of poor air quality.

So a ‘zero emissions network’ has been set up by Tower Hamlets with neighbouring Hackney and Islington councils to help businesses reduce emissions and improve air quality.

Getting more people to cycle to work with a place to safely leave their bikes without the East End’s notorious bike thieves getting their hands on them is all part of the clean air strategy.
