The population of Tower Hamlets has broken through the 300,000 mark, according to latest statistics from the Greater London Authority.

Government budget cuts mean public services battling to keep pace are facing a £58 million squeeze over the next three years, the town hall points out.

“We are facing ‘the perfect storm’ of less funding as more people than ever rely on us for services,” mayor John Biggs said.

“Thousands of people are flocking to the East End. It’s time the government recognised that and gave us the funding we need—they must recognise that cuts are just not sustainable.”

He is calling on Downing Street to end “the years of austerity”.

The third fastest growing London borough had 50,000 more people in the last six years, according to latest GLA statistics. A further 87,400 are predicted to move into the East End over the next 25 years, while London overall is forecast to grow by almost two million.
