POLICE have been asked this-afternoon to investigate the expenses of Labour’s candidate for the first directly elected mayor of Tower Hamlets.

Controversial former council leader Lutfur Rahman has been reported for alleged undeclared electoral expenses.

A letter has gone to Police Commander Paul Rickett from Tower Hamlets Tory Opposition leader Peter Golds requesting an investigation “into apparent breaches of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act by Lutfur Rahman who was selected by Labour as its candidate for mayor on September 4.”

Cllr Golds adds: “During his campaign for the nomination Rahman was a ‘regulated donee’ under the terms of the Act, and was required to report all donations worth over £1,500, in cash or in kind (or multiple donations from a single source totalling more than £1,500) within 30 days of accepting them.”

Cllr Rahman brought a legal action against the Labour Party in August which had excluded him from the shortlist for the nomination.

Cllr Golds added: “A wealthy local businessman, Shiraj Haque, has stated to a number of local politicians that he funded this legal action.

“This is a reportable donation that has not been reported within the time limit.”

The move for a police investigation has now put Cllr Rahman’s political future with Labour in doubt. He could be facing suspension today from the party while police probe the allegations.
