Tower Hamlets council row over Bangladeshi Ministers’ visit

A row has erupted after Tower Hamlets council withdrew an invitation for the Speaker of the council to meet with two Bangladeshi Parliamentarians on Thursday.

Speaker of Tower Hamlets, Cllr Rajib Ahmed, had been scheduled use the council chamber to meet with Syed Ashraful Islam MP, local government and rural development minister of Bangladesh, and Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury, a member of the Bangladeshi Parliament.

However, Cllr Peter Golds, leader of the Conservative group, has written to the Advertiser to complaim that the Mayor has stepped in to withdraw permission for the ministers to use the council’s faciltiies.

Cllr Golds is demanding to know from the council the grounds upon which the decision was taken. He added: “To insult a commonwealth parliamentarian in such fashion clearly brings this council into disrepute.”
