POSTMAN Ramesh Singh has been named London regional winner of Royal Mail's First Class People awards for his bravery after a home-made bomb went off on his round in London's East End.

Ramesh collected his accolade from TV presenter Christine Bleakley last night (Monday).

He earned his award after keeping a cool head when a packet exploded after a householder opened it. At first he thought it was a fire from a cooking accident.

He told the homeowner to douse the flames with water and dialled 999 for the Fire Brigade.

Ramesh evacuated the block of flats in Whitechapel and waited outside to direct the emergency services to the building.

The explosion turned out to be a home-made packet bomb which contained carpet tacks, which fortunately it did not fully explode.

Ramesh was awarded £500 as regional winner and a certificate. He had already received £100 for being shortlisted.
