Record Olympic crowds pack London’s Underground, Overground and DLR

The London Underground had more passengers on Friday than any other day in its 149-year history because of the 2012 Olympics, TfL figures released this-morning reveal.

It carried nearly four-and-a-half million, with the busiest line being the Jubilee to Stratford linking the Olympic Park with other London 2012 venues such North Greenwich Arena, Horse Guards Parade at Westminster and Wembley stadium.

The figure breaks the record set just 24 hours before, when 4,300,000 passengers went through the ticket barriers last Thursday including commuters and Olympic spectators.

East London’s DLR network, linking Stratford, ExCel and City Airport, carried more than half-a-million passengers in a day for the first time on Friday.

The Central Line felt the strain carrying record crowds on Saturday to Bethnal Green and Mile End heading for BT Live site at Victoria Park and to Marble Arch for the Live site at Hyde Park, an estimated 110,000 festival-goers.

London Overground numbers including the East London Line through Whitechapel are up more than a quarter, at 27 per cent, week-on-week.

The newly-opened cable car linking ExCel at Silvertown with North Greenwich Peninsular carried more than 24,000 passengers on Saturday.

The Cycle Hire scheme, which was extended to Whitechapel and east London earlier this year, recorded a million hires in July for the first time.
