A snake found stuck in a mousetrap in the street in Limehouse has been rescued by the RSPCA, the second found within a mile in just eight weeks.

The reptile was spotted by a passer-by in Salton Square, off the Commercial Road, stuck in the trap and unable to move.

“The poor snake could barely move,” RSPCA animal collection officer Joe White said. “It was well and truly stuck in the mousetrap. But its injuries don’t seem to be too severe.”

The animal welfare organisation hasn’t been able to trace the owner, so the pink and white corn snake was taken to the South Essex wildlife hospital for veterinary treatment.

“We’ll have to find a new home if we can’t trace the owner,” Joe added. “We don’t know whether this little guy was abandoned or possibly escaped from someone’s home.

“We see lots of snakes get themselves into slippery situations and it can be a shock to see a one in the street.”

A 6ft long orange and black milk snake was found a mile away in Stepney on July 17, which was carefully “arrested” by policemen in Stepney Way wearing thick gloves. The slithery creature was not venomous.

The RSPCA is urging anyone who sees a creature in distress to call its emergency line on 0300 1234 999.
