SIMON Hughes, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has announced he is officially opposing Thames Water’s plans for a super-sewer at King’s Stairs Gardens in Rotherhithe.

The MP for Bermondsey and Southwark visited the park yesterday to tell the community he would be joining the fight to save it from becoming part of the massive Thames Tunnel project.

Hughes often visits the park and said the community was making “good arguments” to protect it from being turned into an industrial no-go zone for seven years.

He said: “I am going to do all I can locally but I am being cautious at this stage in saying whether we can win the fight. I want to make sure there is a proper democratic process and will do everything I can in parliament.”

Thames Water are consulting until January 14 on the plans for a sewer at the Rotherhithe beauty spot. See www.saveksg.com.
