COPS investigating the shooting of an innocent sunbather in London Fields on Saturday have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the incident.

The man was arrested in Hackney last night (Wednesday) and was taken into custody to an east London police station and later bailed to a date in early June pending further inquiries.

Officers were called to London Fields around 3.30pm on Saturday when a stray bullet shot from outside the park hit the 27-year-old from Bethnal Green in the stomach.

London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance attended and took the man to an east London hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening although they may be life changing.

Officers investigating the incident have confirmed that the victim was a totally innocent bystander out for the day enjoying a festival and the sun when the shooting occurred.

Det Sgt Steve Desmond from the Met's gun crime unit Operation Trident said: "We need to hear from witnesses who may have seen people armed with weapons. Anyone with information are asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.
