Teenage singer-musician Shakila Karim is organising a pub night with fellow students from her music college to raise money for the Grenfell Tower disaster victims.

The 19-year-old former pupil of Bethnal Green’s Gatehouse School, now a student at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, is helping organise the Sunday gig in Kilburn on September 10.

“Like the Grenfell Tower families, I know what it is to be homeless,” she says.

“It’s important for the survivors to know we continue to care after the tragedy has faded from the headlines and haven’t forgotten them.”

Shakila and her family, from Poplar, became homeless in 2010 when her father fell ill and lost his business.

“It was the worst time of our lives,” she adds. “But we’ve slowly got back on our feet.”

Multi-talented Shakila, who plays piano, ukulele, drums, violin and recorder as well as sings, has raised funds previously for Help for Heroes charity and for survivors of the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Eight bands have volunteered their time free for the September 10 gig at the Good Ship in Dyne Road, off Kilburn High Road.
