C Onasis yacht has arrived in South Quay

If only yachts could talk then surely this one, currently in the Docklands, could tell a tale or two about the Kennedys and Marilyn Monroe.

Christina O, which is docked at South Quay and open for public tours, used to belong to Aristotle Onassis. The Greek shipping magnate married Jackie Kennedy on board in 1968.

She was one of the most famous society venues of the mid 20th century and played host to legends such as Elisabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Sir Winston Churchill, John F Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and John Wayne.

The 325 foot long yacht which began life as a Canadian Frigate also served during the Second World War before being bought by Onassis for $34,000 in 1954.

It cost him $4million to turn it into a luxury private yacht which he named after his daughter Christina.

When Onassis died in 1975, he left the yacht to Christina who gave it to the Greek government.

Tours of the yacht, lasting an hour and costing £15, including an audio guide, are open to the public over the next four to six weeks.

The yacht is at South Quay until June.
