Young inventors given shot at £50,000 prize

Young people from East London are being urged to put their thinking caps on this summer to come up with the next invention which could change the world.
11-18 year-olds have the chance to win £50,000 worth of prizes as part of the National Science and Engineering competition. The winner will also be crowned either UK Young Engineer of the Year or UK Young Scientist of the Year.
Organisers hope to inspire young people with the thought that some of our most treasured inventions - including trampolines and braille - have come from people of their age.
Former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Kate Bellingham, is involved in the project. She said: “You only need to look around at the technology and engineering in our everyday lives to get inspiration for projects you could do outside of school.
“Who knows, by being creative this summer, youngsters in East London could even come up with an invention or innovation that can change people’s lives.”
The competition closes on October 31, with the winner to be announced at the Big Bang Fair, to be held at the ExCel Centre in March 2013.

Brick Lane Comedy Festival cancelled after opposition from community groups
A comedy festival in east London due to feature acts including Al Murray, Alan Davies and Ed Byrne has been cancelled because of “heavy opposition from local community groups”.
