NFC West: Arizona Cardinals 0 Los Angeles Rams 33

The third of four London NFL games followed the pattern of the first two and ended in a one-sided blowout. This time it was the Arizona Cardinals who suffered the huge defeat, 33–0 in an NFC West contest against the resurgent Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams scored three touchdowns and four field goals as they took apart a Cardinals team expected to challenge for postseason honours before the campaign began while Los Angeles were expected to, at best, tread water.

Two of the Cardinals players are certain to be elected to the Hall of Fame, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and running back Adrian Peterson (who, incidentally, was a New Orleans player when they were at Wembley three weeks earlier), but neither was able to contribute much to the Arizona cause.

And things got even worse for Arizona with the news that their star quarterback Carson Palmer suffered a broken left arm (non-throwing side) which will keep him out for at least eight weeks. Adding to his and the team’s woes, the injury came on a play which led to an interception.

Already leading by six points thanks to 23- and 33-yard field goals from Greg Zuerlein, Lamarcus Joyner intercepted the pass intended for JJ Nelson and returned it to the Cardinals 18. One place later, Todd Gurley ran up the middle for a touchdown.

Jared Goff finished off the next Los Angeles drive with a second touchdown. His nine-yard run was the second-year quarterback’s longest career run.

On the first play of the next Arizona possession, replacement quarterback Drew Stanton’s pass towards John Brown was intercepted by Mark Barron. There was not enough time for a long drive, but Zuerlein did kick a 53-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

In the third quarter, there was only one score, a 34-yard field goal by Zuerlein to stretch the Los Angeles lead to 26–0.

The final score came less than four minutes of the game remaining, Goff throwing an 18-yard pass to Cooper Kupp. Zuerlein’s extra point, his third, gave him a game total of 15 points, seven successful kicks from seven attempts.

The last game of the London series is this Sunday, the Cleveland Browns (0–7 and bottom of the AFC North Division) meeting the Minnesota Vikings (5–2, leaders of the NFC North Division).
