Newham & Essex Beagles sprinter secures progress

All business, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake’s focus is impressive after he booked his spot in the 200m final at the World Championships at London Stadium.

Under dismal skies in the capital, Newham & Essex Beagles’ Mitchell-Blake clocked a time of 20.19 seconds in his semi-final, ensuring his progression as the fifth fastest qualifier.

He will be joined in tonight’s final by South African Wayde Van Niekerk, track and field’s newest superstar who despite winning 400m gold on Tuesday, only just scraped through to his second medal race of the championships.

Isaac Makwala, who was barred from competing in the heats as the IAAF attempted to contain a norovirus outbreak, also reached the final after running a solo time trial ahead of competition getting underway on Wednesday.

But former world 100m champion Yohan Blake and Olympic bronze medallist Christophe Lemaitre didn’t advance and Mitchell-Blake is showing no sign of nerves, determined to give plenty for the British crowd to cheer.

And he’s dreaming of becoming the first British medalist over the distance since John Regis took silver in Stuttgart 24 years ago.

“The conditions are the same for everyone and I just had to execute my race, which I did,” he said.

“The race is done, I’m just pleased I got through but this is a huge chance for me now to do something truly special.

“I really feel like there is more to come. I’m going to seize this opportunity and leave it on the track.

“You can talk about everyone else and Wayde is a sensational athlete but I’m just concentrating on my lane and my lane only.”
