Nominations are being welcomed for the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards, in association with Vitality.

And London athletes could well feature prominently in the running, including Newham & Essex Beagles Asha Philip and fellow World Championship 4x100m relay silver medalists Daryll Neita (Shaftesbury Barnet) and Desiree Henry, whose Enfield & Haringey team-mate Laviai Nielsen landed 4x400m silver.

Now in their 30th year, the awards celebrate the outstanding contribution sport made by elite athletes, coaches, administrators, community volunteers and inspirational women.

And the general public are invited to submit nominations for seven categories at sportswomenoftheyear.co.uk before the deadline at midday on Monday September 25.

A panel of experts will then select shortlists in each category and winners will be revealed at the Hilton London Bankside hotel on October 26, with the ceremony broadcast live on Sky Sports.

It has been a landmark year for women’s sport, with success enjoyed in many disciplines, including cricket, hockey, football, rugby, tennis and athletics.

Previous winners include Sally Gunnell, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Zara Phillips, Victoria Pendleton, Christine Ohuruogu and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Four-time Olympic cycling gold medalist Laura Kenny was the 2016 sportswoman of the year and Eleanor Mills, editorial director of the Sunday Times, said: “We’re delighted to be able to honour the outstanding sportswomen of the UK and Ireland in the 30th anniversary of our annual sportswomen awards.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our female athletes and the public vote always gives the awards added significance.”

Award categories include Sportswoman of the Year, Young Sportswoman of the Year, Team of the Year, Disability Sportswoman of the Year, Community Award, the Helen Rollasaon Award for Inspiration and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
