Barking Abbey London Lions got into an early hole as they went down 69-49 to WBBL rivals Nottingham Wildcats at the Copper Box Arena on Friday.

Reigning WBBL MVP Ashley Harris scored her side’s first 13 points on her way to a 39-point, 16-rebound outing, as Nottingham led 24-12 after the opening period.

Despite cutting the gap to five points in the second quarter it was as close as Abbey would get, with Christina Gaskin’s 18 points leading their scoring, as Urysla Cotton had 12 points and Charlotte Ellmore eight.

“Disappointed with the result and the performance,” said head coach Mark Clark.

“Obviously, Ashley Harris is an incredibly good player but to allow her to start the game the way we did, really did didn’t give us an opportunity to compete.

“We did a great job of getting back into the game before half time, Christina Gaskin was good but obviously a lot to work on and that’s the only way we can respond.”

The hosts came up with nine rejections on the defensive end, but also allowed 19 offensive rebounds with the Wildcats dominating the battle on the boards.

Abbey return to action in the New Year when they host Manchester Mystics on January 7 (2pm).
