Streatham forward Jacob Ranson reflects on the new-look London Raiders team and how he thinks they will do in the National League this season.

It has been nearly a week since the opening night for the London Raiders at the newly-refurbished Lee Valley ice rink and I’ve had some time to analyse it.

My initial thoughts going into the match last weekend were that it would be a tricky test as the squad they have built is the biggest and I’d say probably the best since being forced out of Romford.

I’d heard plenty about the side training on and off the ice a lot throughout the summer and expected a well conditioned outfit, but coach Sean Easton admitted this week his side didn’t work hard enough on the opening night and it let them down.

Obviously from my perspective it was great to go in there and spoil their opening night, after being predicted to finish top of the old NIHL clubs throughout the summer.

I think a lot of fans and players expect big things where they basically have the best of Chelmsford and London mixed together, but I don’t think they fully understand how good the old EPL teams and players are.

If you look at the game we just played, I think the three best players on the ice were Michael Farn, Adam Carr and Ryan Watt, who looked a step above most players.

Raiders have a lot of potential to be a very dangerous side if they use their squad wisely as they’ve got plenty of talented youngsters who I’m sure will enjoy the rise in standard this season to develop their games.

The skill is there and they have four lines who can all play, but I feel across the league work rate is going to be the most important. It’s just like the cliché says hard work beats talent if talent isn’t working hard.

Looking at the league this season you need to work hard to get results every night as there are no easy games and there is definitely no way you’ll beat one of the old EPL teams without out working them.

Moving on to this weekend, it could really set the tone for the gold and blue army as they face two old rivals in Invicta Dynamos and Streatham (again!), who are both clubs I’m sure they’re expecting to nab points off.

Both games will be tough, though, as they will both be planning to take points off the Raiders throughout the season as well.
