It was a family affair as Kevin Mitchell celebrated his 33rd victory in 34 bouts at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday night with his son Vincent joining him in the ring.

The local favourite delighted his large-sized supporting squad who packed the east London venue as he defeated Barcelona-based Dominican opponent Felix Lora with a clear decision after 10 rounds on the Frank Warren promotion.

Mitchell was in action for the first time since last July, when victory over John Murray should have brought a world title fight with WBA champion Brandon Rios.

However, Mitchell missed that world title fight after police found a knife in his car and he was given 100 hours community service and was subjected to a three-month curfew for the offence which stopped him travelling to the USA.

Instead, it was loser Murray who was given the chance and was stopped by the heavy-hitting Rios in 11 rounds at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Mitchell insists he has learned from the disappointment of missing that big chance: “If things had been different, I would have been WBA world champion right now,” he said.

“It gave me the kick up the backside, to realise where I want to go and realise my dreams.”

That dream could come true in a showdown clash with Burns on a big open air promotion either in Scotland – or London.

Mitchell admits his preference would be a clash at the Upton Park football ground where he suffered the lone defeat in his pro career in May 2010.

On that night he was stopped in three rounds by tough Australian Michael Katsidis for the interim WBO world lightweight crown.

He admits: “I’d go to Scotland, but I’d like it at Upton Park and I’ll sell a lot more tickets than I sold for my world title challenge there with Michael Katsidis. It will be England v Scotland.

“Financially, it makes most sense for both of us to get the fight in London, but he’s the champion and I won’t pass the fight by if I have to venture over the border.”
