Essex batsman Alastair Cook was pleased to get to spend to some time at the crease as their rain-affected match at Hampshire ended in a draw on Monday.

With only 88 overs of play possible in the first three days due to rain and bad light, the defending champions saw the hosts declare on 351-7 before lunch.

Peter Siddle (3-62) proved the pick of the Essex attack, with Cook and Nick Browne (26) putting on 54 before three wickets fell for seven runs.

Cook – following a difficult winter with England in Australia and New Zealand – added 87 with Ravi Bopara (84 not out) but fell for 84 to Chris Wood, after three hours in the middle, as Essex eventually reached 300-6 before the captains shook hands.

“It has been a long four days here but you can’t do much about the weather,” said Cook.

“It was nice to get a couple of points and nice to score a few runs. I would’ve liked to have scored a hundred but you can’t always have your way.

“You mark yourself on hundreds so it would have been nice to get one, but it was a decent ball. I felt comfortable.”

Having seen their first match of the season washed out without a ball being bowled at Yorkshire, then beaten Lancashire by 31 runs, Essex head coach Anthony McGrath tried to reflect on the good things at the Ageas Bowl, saying: “The whole game we will take some big positives.

“Peter Siddle was brilliant, if you look at the runs he conceded, and Sam Cook was having his first bowl of the season, he’ll be better for that.

“Alastair Cook looked like he had never been away and continued his form from last year. Ravi has impressed everyone in pre-season and it is nice to see him get a score, not just for us but for him and his confidence.

“At one point it looked like we were only going to get 250, but when Foster and Ravi were at the crease and then Harmer gave us that nice boost to 300 and a nice end to the day.

“You’ve seen how cold and miserable it has been the last four days. The lads were bowling in beanies and I think Alastair Cook had seven layers on at one point!”
