Essex enjoyed a pair of wins at the start of their pre-season tour in Dubai.

The squad was split into two teams to play matches at the ICC Academy, including the likes of Tom Westley, Nick Browne, Ravi Bopara and Adam Wheater, and the Dubai International Stadium, where Ryan ten Doeschate led a side including Alastair Cook, Varun Chopra and new signing Simon Harmer.

And Bopara’s unbeaten 93 set up a five-wicket win in the former match, with Westley (47), Browne (42) and Ellis-Grewal (28 not out) also among the runs as Essex chased 240, after Bopara (2-53), Callum Taylor (2-41) and Joe Ellis-Grewal (2-34) had taken two wickets apiece to hold the hosts to 239-8.

The second game was much closer, with Essex edging to a one-wicket win after being set a revised target of 200.

Harmer (2-18), Paul Walter (2-22) and Jamie Porter (2-23) nabbed braces as the home side were skittled for just 124.

And it was agreed that Essex would chase a larger target, but Cook fell for just two runs, before Ten Doeschate hit 89 and James Foster added 32.

Walter (21) also made a useful contribution with the bat, before Aaron Nijjar and Matt Quinn saw Essex to the finish line.

Essex are due to take on Middlesex in a 50-over match, before another inter-squad fixture on Monday and a two-day fixture against the UAE on March 22-23.

Having a brand new kitchen is something that lots of people want but can only dream of. Sadly keeping up to date and making our living spaces as nice as they can be is a costly and incredibly stressful business. Even a fresh coat of paint makes all the difference but isn’t easy or quick.
