Jamie Porter and Dan Lawrence were included in the England Lions squad on Monday – along with Tom Westley – and will travel to Australia later this year for a training camp, and the young pair have been tipped for bright international futures.

Ravi Bopara warned Porter to be ready for an opportunity after watching the seamer take 75 wickets this season for the County Championship Division One champions.

“Jamie is getting closer and you never know what’s around the corner,” said Bopara, who played 13 Tests for England.

“There is a long tour going on in Australia and no doubt there will be some injuries, so the opportunity could be closer than he thinks.

“It is a long tour and I don’t wish injuries on anyone, but if it does come around I hope he gets a chance to show what he can do. It would be a really good test for him.”

Alastair Cook echoed his Essex team-mate Bopara and hailed the improvement of Porter over the last couple of seasons.

Cook will be part of the England squad in Australia for the Ashes and admits it may not be long before he is joined by more players from the Division One champions.

The 32-year-old recently played alongside Tom Westley for his country, but the Essex number three wasn’t included in the 16-man senior group to fly out Down Under.

After spending time in the middle with both Nick Browne and Lawrence this season at Chelmsford, Cook admits the club have some special talents on their books and hopes more county success can help them push to earn their Test caps.

“Playing for your country is ultimately what everyone wants to do,” said the former England captain.

“You play county cricket to try and play for England and days like winning the title are part of the journey and I’ve seen the improvement in people like Jamie over the last couple of years.

“Nick is on the same path and Dan as well, so they are very special cricketers and I think it is exciting times for Essex.

“This is something we all should enjoy, but come the winter everyone needs to put in the hard work again to try and make sure it isn’t just once in 25 years again.

“But with people like Sam Cook coming through and other good cricketers who are born and bred Essex, it makes it very special and exciting.”
