Essex fast bowler Jamie Porter was delighted to help the 2017 champions wrap up an innings victory over Worcestershire soon after lunch on day three of their County Championship Division One encounter at Chelmsford.

After claiming career-best figures of 7-41 to skittle the visitors for 94 in their first innings, Porter dismissed Joe Clarke without addition to his overnight score of 74 and finished with 4-57 as Worcestershire were all out for 251 second time around.

That allowed Essex to complete victory by an innings and 129 runs, which sent their opponents down to Division Two and Porter, who had suffered with sickness, said: “It was nice to win in that style, to win by an innings and in a day three finish.

“It is always nice to see the back of Joe Clarke, that was a big moment and a relief to get him out earlier on.

“I feel like the last couple of weeks I have bowled well without too much rewards.

“In my head I tell myself that when you bowl well the wickets will come. In fact I wanted to get through the spell quickly due to my illness.”

A match haul of 11-98 took his season tally to 56 and Porter, who was called into the England squad earlier this summer for their Test series against India without making an appearance, admitted he has not made any plans yet for the winter, with a tour to Sri Lanka on the horizon.

He added: “I have no other plans for the winter until the squads are selected.

“I wouldn’t say that was the aim because you just want to go out there and do your job and if an England selector is watching on a specific day then that is great.

“It would be amazing to get a call for Sri Lanka and I’ll have my fingers crossed for the next 24 hours. I think I have put myself in a good position for a call.”
