Essex’s Jamie Porter admitted it felt ‘pretty special’ to be on the brink of the County Championship title after beating Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Porter took 3-37, alongside Simon Harmer (4-25) and Sam Cook (3-42). as Essex dismissed the hosts for 112 to win by an innings and 56 runs.

And they were left waiting for news of Lancashire’s match at Somerset, where the Red Rose county need a win of their own to extend the title race, but were four wickets down following on at tea.

Essex had to fight for a draw with Lancashire in the first round of fixtures back in April and Porter said: “In the first three games it seemed we might just have to survive in this division, but the way we bounced back and not only saved games we could have lost, but dominated games in the way we have, has been pretty special.

“As a group of lads we are very tight-knit. When guys have a bad day we are all right behind them and we all get along so well off the pitch and have got a great coach and assistant coach and it works so well.

“We’ve kept saying to each other we are on the brink of making history for the club and that’s a pretty special feeling in itself.”

After claiming their eighth win of the season, to extend their unbeaten record to 12 matches, Essex visit Hampshire next week before completing their campaign at home against Yorkshire.

And only one year on from winning the Division Two title, Porter added: “If I’m being brutally honest, winning the championship was the ambition at the start of the season.

“A lot of people thought that was too ambitious but we thought ‘why not?’

“We knew we are a side which can win games. We know we have got the players who can win you a game so we knew we wanted to push. We felt like we could definitely push.”

Porter’s seven-wicket match haul takes his tally for the campaign to 64, with Harmer one behind.

And he says he thrives with the ball in his hand, adding: “I like the responsibility and being the leader of the attack. When you come into the side you look up to the guys who are leading and you want to be one of them. I love winning games of cricket and hate losing so I just do whatever I can to help us win.”
